   Роботу присвячено комплексному дослідженню чинників на рівнях абстрактної граматичної системи мови і функціонування граматичних одиниць у складі висловлювання, що зумовлюють внутрішньокатегоріальні заміни числових форм іменника в англо-українському перекладі художніх прозових творів, а також визначають числову форму англійського субстантива групи singularia tantum у мові перекладу, у випадку, якщо його український відповідник може подаватися в обох числових формах. Встановлено, що внутрішньокатегоріальні заміни форм числа іменника в англо-українському перекладі простежуються у контекстах транспозиції та нейтралізації числових форм іменника.

   Работа посвящена комплексному исследованию факторов на уровне абстрактной грамматической системы языка и на уровне функционирования грамматических единиц в составе предложения, которые обусловливают внутрикатегориальные замены числовых форм имени существительного в англо-украинских переводах художественных прозаических произведений, а также определяют форму числа английского существительного группы singularia tantum в языке перевода, в случае, если его украинский эквивалент может использоваться в двух формах числа. Установлено, что внутрикатегориальные замены форм числа существительного в англо-украинских переводах наблюдаются в контекстах транспозиции и нейтрализации форм числа существительного.

   The thesis sets out to provide a comprehensive description of factors that cause intracategorial changes of grammatical forms in Ukrainian-English translation, namely, the divergence in substantive numerical forms during translation of English literary works into Ukrainian and factors that define the numerical form of Ukrainian countable nouns during translation of English uncountable ones. The factors that cause divergence in numerical forms of English and Ukrainian nouns during translation are studied at two grammatical levels – at the level of abstract grammatical system and at the level of usage of grammatical units in a sentence. Divergences in numerical forms of English and Ukrainian nouns that are not caused by different structure of grammatical category of number and different rules of using number forms of nouns in some syntactical structures of sentences and word-combinations are not considered in the thesis.
   The research is based on the data collected from original and translated texts of English literary works. The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusions, and bibliography.
   The first chapter deals with the general description of factors that cause intracategorial changes of grammatical forms in Ukrainian-English translation, namely, the divergence in numerical forms of nouns during translation of English literary works into the Ukrainian language, and the principles of differentiation of contexts of neutralization and transposition of numerical forms of English nouns in Ukrainian translations. Neutralization of grammatical forms leads to synonymy of their usage in a sentence. So, contexts where the translator can use both numerical forms of a Ukrainian noun during translation are called contexts of neutralization of substantive numerical forms. Contexts of transposition are the contexts that force a translator to use a contrary numerical form of an English noun in Ukrainian translation. Contexts of neutralization and transposition of substantive numerical forms are divided into several types on the base of factors that cause neutralization and transposition of numerical forms in a sentence within contexts of neutralization and transposition. Neutralization and transposition are caused by differences in the structure of the grammatical category of number of English and Ukrainian nouns, different rules of using number forms of English and Ukrainian nouns in some referential usages, syntactical, social and cultural factors.
   Chapter II reveals the peculiarities of rendering number forms of English nouns in contexts of neutralization and transposition which are caused by different rules of using number forms of English and Ukrainian nouns in some referential usages. The chapter highlights ways and methods of translating referential, existential, generic and universal substantives.
   Chapter III deals with syntactic peculiarities of translating English nouns in some syntactical structures of sentences and word-combinations into Ukrainian. Research into syntactical factors is important for defining causes of divergence in substantive numerical forms in translation of English literary works into Ukrainian because the syntactic use of number forms of nouns in both languages does not fully coincide. The author pays much attention to the translation of numerical forms of English nouns into Ukrainian in clauses of comparison, in quantitative word-combinations, in two-, three- and multi-componential noun clusters, and in distributive contexts. The divergence in substantive numerical forms during translation can also be observed in the translation of nouns in syntactical position of adverb of place. In Ukrainian, it should be noted, the rule of using number forms of nouns defined by numerals differs from those of the English.
   The present research has covered intracategorical changes of grammatical forms in Ukrainian-English translation, namely the divergence in substantive numerical forms during the translation of English literary works into Ukrainian and factors that define the numerical form of Ukrainian countable nouns in translations of English uncountable ones. Its results can be used for solving practical problems of translating numerical forms of English nouns into Ukrainian. The thesis submitted will contribute to the theory of rendering grammar forms and applying intracategorical changes of grammatical forms in Ukrainian-English translation as well as contrastive grammar.
